Mark Lindsay – Miss America lyrics
As a young girl she ran wild - freely gave herself to men who understood.
She lay naked in the sun giving birth to what was clear and strong and good.
Oh Lord to hear her laugh was to know a joy that drove a sole insane.
And she'd lead you down a path through her river valleys etched in summer rain.

Do you Miss America,
Miss America,
Miss America, I know I do.

She was offered jewels and fame and she wore the furs of souls who once she loved.
She was driven to the site of a marble grave where lay a dying dove.
Rage exploded 'cross her face and make up melted on the cemetery lawn.
And she cried for an embrace and she wrapped her fingers 'round the deep rose dawn.

Do you Miss America,
Miss America,
Miss America, I know I do.

I've seen her in the forest and she's singin' peaceful songs for you and me,
And I've heard her in the hills and I'm glad to say she's still alive and free.
Oh Lord her lovin' eyes casting ripples 'neath the sun without a sound.
And she mirrors a clearing sky as her children dance along the rain washed ground.

Do you Miss America,
Miss America,
Miss America, I know I do.

Do you Miss America,
Miss America,
Miss America, I know I do.

Do you Miss America,
Miss America,
Miss America, I know I do.

You had to be there. The late 60's and early 70's were the 'hippie' time of peace and love and rebellion against the Vietnam war. The songs were often cryptic. This song is about the loss of innocence, yearning for a more innocent time.
The reference to the dying dove (one of their peace symbols), "and she cried for the rest" is about young men dying in Vietnam and all the body bags coming home. And " she wrapped her fingers round the deep rose dawn" probably a reference to all the bloodshed.
But then their is hope while young hippies are singing and dancing and communing with nature.

Mark Lindsey was on a Bicentennial special in 1976, and a video of the settlement and trials of America was set to the song. Never knew what the song meant until I saw that video. Wish I could see it again, but no one recalls it, not even Mark himself!!! Someone else must remember that video!!!

I have always loved this song, and I like to sing it sometimes myself when at the piano. But I have never quite figured out the actual words for the line, "and she cried for........." Most lyric compilations have it as "...the rest" or "...an embrace". But neither of those sounds to me like what Lindsey is saying. Phonetically, it sounds more like , "and she cried for der brets". So, what is it really? Anyone have an idea?
