This song means that life is not measured in time, but in the moments you spend and who you spend it with. It's the little things in life, coffee and hugs, crying or laughing. Don't remember a year as another year gone, but as a year you spent in the company of good friends that love you. "Measure your life in love"- the people and things you love. For life without love is death.
Alternatively, in context of the musical, the song is a summary of the main characters' year.

This song has a very deep meaning. They are basically saying to measure your life in love, and nothing else, not money, fame, clothes, material goods, nothing else matters. They are saying that they would rather lead a life full of love than one filled with material goods that have no meaning. This group of friends are bohemians living in the slums of New York, surviving on love and each other alone, but the fact that they don't have enough money to pay the rent is not relevant because they have love, and that's all that matters. My dance compay did a rent production, but that was before I saw the movie or the play, so I didn't understand the depth and meaning of the story. I wish I had.

Soon after I saw this number performed at the Tony Awards on TV my dauhter, Jennifer and I flew to New York for a "Theatre Trip" with the main goal of seeing Rent onstate. We had a great time and saw several shows but after viewing Rent we were so overcome that we just sat in the theatre for awhile -- if we had done NOTHING ELSE on that whole trip it would have been worth it to see this amazing production. Subsequently I saw the show several more times in California and in Florida.....saw the movie too. "Seasons of Love" says it all. I'm now almot 80 years old and this song is how I want to be remembered.....that I measured my life in love.....because that is how I have tried to live.

To enjoy each moment you have with the ones you love and never take a minute for granted since you don't know when he or she will be taken from you. Be the one you love a grandparent, parent, step-parent, aunt, uncle, cousin, brother, step-brother, sister, step-sister, friend, the love of your life. The time a human spends on earth is short and because of that it should always be treasured and cherished.

This song is amazing I never saw rent but I had to sing this song for my hs chorus class and now I really understand the meaning. Love conquers all and no matter what conflict or anything you go through with a loved one how can you measure a year if not through the seasons of love. Focus on the positives and leave the negative in the dust. Measure your life in love.

This song is about the untimely death from aids of a drag queen by the name of Angel. She was in a relationship with Collins at the time of her death and they were the only two people in their group of friends, immediately after Angel's funeral, everyone found themselves head in their different directions. (Yes, I've seen both the musical and the movie, I also can't listen to this song without crying).

My boyfriend of three years loved this song, and he loved rent in general, he was an actor, and really into music and theatre, but unfortunately, he passed away on october 14, 2009. Whenever I hear this song, I immediately think of andrew, and how much joy he has brought this world. He did more in his short 16 years than a lot of people do in 80! Thank you andrew for everything you did on this earth, and I can't wait to share a life-time with you in heaven.
