To me, this song is about a young couple who have been in love (possibly each other's first love), and they have reached the point where their lives have drifted apart. They still care deeply about each other, but they realise for whatever reason, that in a romantic sense their love has come to an end. She has found someone else, and there is nowhere else to go. They cannot remain as friends given the circumstances, and so to me it is about the end of their romantic love also ending their relationship as deeply close friends. The realisation of this has hit home to the writer, and so he is "trying to survive" and move on. In the end, life moves on for both of them, and the writer comes out the other side of this a different person who has learnt from the experience. Particularly, he has learnt that although the loss is extremely painful, it is just part of his development as a person, and that he will survive. There is an air of inevitably about the whole situation given that they were young when they fell in love, and still had so much to learn about love and about themselves as people. Ultimately, there is a realisation and acceptance of this on the writer's part.
