This is not about a lover, it's about a crappy parent. The parent is a mess and his influence is making the child a mess. It sounds like the parent may have been dying (perhaps from alcohol or drug abuse) and the child had mixed emotions. Resenting the parent, but still hoping he would survive and not leave him. The parent destroyed himself and the child fears he is following the same path.

Ithe song is about a man who has been betrayed by his lover. He is 'nothing less' than a shadow in the life of the one he loved, who has apparently moved on without him. He is left broken and hurt, filled with hatred because he didn't expect his love to betray him the way she did. He feels the need to hurt her back the way she did and hence 'become a monster' like her. But he wants her to stay alive so that she can feel the pain which is emphasized in: 'i brought you to life so I can hear you scream'. However the persona tries to accept reality as he does not want to live in a relationship based on a lie which is accentuated in: 'and I won't live your weak wicked lie' therefore deep down he knows that breaking up with her was for the best. He is even angry with himself for letting this hurt him or get under his skin and so he orders himself to 'live and fight' convincing himself that she is a 'love left behind' however he is 'one step behind' her as he cannot move on like her leaving a connotation that he is still in love with her even though she hurt him so much.
