I'm reading these thoughts about what the meaning is behind the song Sad Lisa. What I believe or think really doesn't matter because I didn't write the song. My thoughts would only related to my own personal experiences as I'm sure most of these others are as well. I believe it is simply about the depths of depression and how so many of us try to hide it behind a smile, a sarcastic sense of humor. But we only bring "her" out when we are alone so as not to burden family and friends.

I agree with unregistered. I believe Cat is singing about a transsexual. A biological male who identifies as a female and is trapped in an existence that brings nothing but sadness. No one can see her, but she exists in him and he is struggling with his identity and trying to let her out.

I believe this song is about the feminine aspect in Cat Stevens himself. He knows how hard it is for "her" to be trapped inside another person's dark hall (his heart). And even if one day he might "free her", "no one can see her" since it is so hard for a man to assume femininity.
