    This song is about a guy who's hooking up with a girl while he still has a broken heart because of another girl. He loved girl 1 and he's using girl 2 to help him forget. He's singing to girl 2. He wants her by his side to help him dry the tears he's cried. He promises he'll try to love again.
    It's not a very good thing to do to girl 2, but it happens. People use others.
    This is a song you would never want to have a new lover sing to you.

    As well as discussing the intertwining relationships of the speaker and two girls, he is also discussing the heart ache one feels for their first love. We can all ralate to the first time one falls in love and how strong and intense that love is, it is something that is never forgottena nd although the relationship may end and lovers go their seperate ways.
    The speaker is saying that he is willing to be with Girl 2 but he still have Girl 1 on his mind, yet he is working on removing her.

    It's a shame subsequent performers have chosen to omit "When it comes to being loved, she's first". It changes the entire meaning of the song.
    He's still in love with Number 1, despite the fact that she's not very good at loving him. She's first on his list.
    But he's willing to take a chance on Number 2. Not because he loves her, but because she just might help him get over Number 1.
    I wouldn't count on it.
