I believe that this song is about a mother whose child has to leave home- like for war, or maybe a parent sending their child off to where they'll be safe. And the mother and child would always sing together. And the mother worries for her child, but rejoices when word comes, and though the mother knows she will not be able to join her child, she still tells them she will follow.

Imagine that your soul mate has passed away - and at the funeral, this is your eulogy. It's your time to tell your dead partner how much you are going to miss them ('oh the nights will be long, when I'm not in your arms), how much you loved them and always will love them ('i'll be in your song that you sing to me). You tell them that you will never ever forget him/her ('you will be far away. I will follow you'). And then you recall all those happy memories you had together ('i walk by the shore and I hear your song come so faint and so clear. '). You'll think of them often - and will miss him/her dearly, but they are free, and hopefully, while they are in heaven, they'll be thinking of you too.

I always thought that her lover left Ireland and went to America for a better life but she had to stay behind. She knows she may never see him again so she tells him to sing her a song from across the sea and she will sing it to and maybe they will hear it. :) It's a way to cope with your loved ones leaving their home country to have a better life in America. A dream for most of the people who immigrated here from the various countries we all came from. It is a bitter sweet song of hope loss and longing to see your loved one again.
