"When I was roughly 12, 13 years old, I was awoken somewhat early in the morning by my father, who preceded to tell me of our neighbour who had fallen in the bathroom
Um, Mr. Bowers had wedged his head between the wall to the bathroom and the door which opened up to the bathroom
So here I am, pressed to action to save someones life and I couldn't. I could hear Mr. Bowers breathing, I could hear him groaning, but yet, I couldn't get to him. I was afraid the harder I pushed, I would damage his head, but I couldn't push hard enough to get myself into the bathroom
We couldn't go through the window in the bathroom as it was closed, and it was a double secured window
I guess, in hindsight at the time, he said that had we had an axe to chop down the door, possibly that may have saved his life
The paramedics didn't arrive in time, and I couldn't get to him, and to this day, I am often somewhat haunted by the fact of, could I have saved this gentleman's life if I had thought of something else? If there was another way to get to him?
Everyone's life is worth saving. Everyone has value. So, the next time you are confronted with having to make the most of a very sad amount of opportunity, be patient, and hope that an answer will come to you"
