Chameleon Circuit – Exterminate, Regenerate lyrics
It's been such a long time since I met you back on Skaro
And I'm pretty sure that you know
That not much has changed since then
It doesn't matter how hard you try to remove me
I think you will agree
That if one of us dies, then the other will too
I am locked in war with you

Exterminate, Regenerate
I thought you always knew our fate
To just keep fighting on and on
While time keeps turning

Regenerate, Exterminate
And even though we are the same
Why don't you hop into your ship
And leave me burning

Even though, as men, we have our contrasts
We're of exactly the same class
And our constant companion is death
Look at you, fashioning people into weapons
How can you say that you're better than me?
We both carry the fire that is set to devour life

Exterminate, Regenerate
I thought you always knew our fate
To just keep fighting on and on
While time keeps turning
Regenerate, Exterminate
And even though we are the same
Why don't you hop into your ship
And leave me burning

We both carry the fire that has the power to end life
But what I do with that flame is what separates our types
If it takes till the end of reality to beat you
Then I'll be sure to meet you at the exit of the world

Exterminate, Regenerate
You know that it isn't too late
To end what seems impossible
And leave time turning
Regenerate, Exterminate
And even though we aren't the same
Why don't you hop into my ship
And we can settle this
And we can settle this

Exterminate, Regenerate
You know that it isn't too late
To end what seems impossible
And leave time turning
Regenerate, Exterminate
And even though we aren't the same
Why don't you hop into my ship

Exterminate, Regenerate
I thought you always knew our fate
To just keep fighting on and on
While time keeps turning
Regenerate, Exterminate
And even though we are the same
Why don't you hop into your ship
And leave me burning

And we can settle this, forever
Yeah we can travel time, together
We can settle this, forever

I personally think that this song is awesome. I do't watch doctor who - yeah I know, what the hell is wrong with me?! - but from what I've read and heard, I'm pretty sure that it is about the master and the doctors. Just my opinion, though. But, really, I don't care about the meaning, it's just an awesome song! Alex and the others trock! By the way, if you like this song or chameleon circuit, you'll probably enjoy "an awful lot of running" and "blink". Both songs are about doctor who and just as awesome as exterminate, regenerate!

The song is indeed a duet - this isn't just Davros singing, but the Doctor as well. Everything in the song that applies to the Daleks - the Time War, that their existence is closely tied to that of the Doctor's, that throughout space and time, the Daleks and the Doctor will continue to stand in each other's way, and that they both have the power to do equally great and terrible things - applies to the Doctor's feelings toward the Dalek race.

And that's the beauty of this song - you can basically interpret what is said either way, and you wouldn't be wrong.

The Doctor and the Master? It's from the Dalek's perspective explaining their complex Frenemy relationship. The line "we can settle this forever, yea we can travel in time together" is an attempt to make peace knowing that since they are so similar that they can rule the universe together. However the doctor doesn't want this so they are "locked in war".

As to the comment about the master singing about the doctor, the fashioning people into weapons make sense, but the last verse sounds like the doctor, as well as other lines. For example: verses 6 and 7. Maybe it's a duet all with the same voice, symbolizing "and even though we are the same." Now, I've only seen the reboot of doctor who and have no idea if the doctor ever met the master on skaro or vice versa. So the skaro thing and the words exterminate might be intentionally misleading. *season 8 spoilers* What I find funny is the line "if one of us dies, then the other will too." I know I thought the master was permanently gone when I saw the end of season 4. But what happens in season 8? The master/mistress, aka missy! Ironic seeing as the song was made long before season 8 even came out. I don't know the exact date of the song or album's release.

I think that this song is talking about The Master and The Doctor. The last lines clearly prove that it is not about the Daleks, but in fact about The Master. When The Master was dying and refused to regenerate, The Doctor was begging him to regenerate because he was one of the last timelords. This is when he also offered to take The Master along with him and travel through space and time. On the other hand, I do not think that The Doctor would invite any Dalek to travel with him in the tardis.

It's a reference to the scene between the doctor and davros towards the end of the episode "journey's end" (series 4 finale) in which davros accuses the doctor of being the "destroyer of worlds", of turning his companions into weapons and basically being very similar to davros himself (who created the daleks).
The first 4 parts (verse-chorus-verse-chorus) is davros talking to the doctor. They met on "skaro" which is davros's planet (that, in the series, is 1975) and then the time war is mentioned (which is "time locked") and presumably lasts eternally in its own time loop, where the daleks keep exterminating the doctor and the doctor keeps regenerating (hence the titular lyric).
The middle part of the song ("we both carry the fire... ")is, I think, divided in half: first bit ("but what i do with that fire is what separates our types") is the doctor's reply to davros's accusations that they are the same, since the doctor uses his potentially deadly power to do good. And then davros replies ("if it takes till the end of reality to beat you... ") that they are eternal enemies.
In the last bit of the song (chorus-end verse) it's the doctor speaking, he repeats they are not the same, proving his goodness by proposing to davros to save him and end the eternal fight once and for all. But, as we already heard earlier in the song (1st&2nd chorus) and saw in the series, davros declines the offer. His loss: p

I'm pretty sure this actually about the doctor and the master. I think the master is the narrator of this song--he's always going on about how the doctor isn't as good as he thinks he is and how they're actually the same, if the doctor could only see.
Also, the line, "look at you, fashioning people into weapons", makes sense in the sense that the doctor, like with rose, martha and donna, (even amy and river, I suppose), convinces people into trusting him entirely, despite putting themselves in harms way, and rose even literally became a weapon in the season 1 finale.
I just feel like davros does not have this sort of connection to the doctor and the doctor is the subject of this song, not the singer.
