It seems to me that the author was in deep pain, caused from some sort of abusive relationship. Could have been the cruelty and great injustice of slavery or the abusive relationships between spouses or between parents and children. This pain could have been experienced personally or being lived vicariously through a loved one or acquaintance. Anyway it seems that the author knew of The Lord personally, and all the suffering He, Himself, went through for us when He was on earth. He found strength and encouragement by reflecting on Jesus, and on His great love and sacrifice for us. He say's also that when we treat each other so poorly, it is a direct indication that we don't know Jesus. If we did our behavior would mimic His. No bigotry, abuse, prejudice, inequity would be reflected in us towards each other. We would indeed and action love, walk and talk as Jesus did while He lived on earth.
