This song's meaing is actually pretty straight-forward. He is talking about how songs are about life, and can impact a person. He specificly names "main street" and how it reminds him of how he feels sometimes. The chorus explains why he does what he does (singing for his career). He want to impact people the way he is impacted by music. He ran off, thus the "born to run" reference, and then came back to his loving mother, and when he hears merle haggard's "mama tried" (good song) he is reminded that he ran off and this brings back more memories. So he sings his songs so that he can impact someone elses life. That my opinion at least.

David is describing his purpose for pouring everything he has into creating the perfect song because he knows the beauty of being able to connect with a song in such a way that it moves you from deep within. It connects with your deepest dreams and emotions. If he can labor in vain to create this song for millions of dreamers, his songs will be the sound of a million dreams.

I just heard this song this morning on television. March 2nd 2012 I was in a tornado and almost died at uk hospital in lexington ky. The doctors did not give me to live but maybe a few days. I was on life support and I had a lot of injuries from the tornado. But thankfully god started healing me and each day I got stronger and I pulled through it all and I am home today. I am still recovering but I am doing so much better. I heard this song though and it just really caught my attention. And I liked it. I was a college student before this happen and this song just kinda gave me encouragement to keep follpwing your dreams.
