    In the music video he lights a cigarette at the base of the stairs and heads off into the night. In my and many others youth we've had many were the occasion where the last time we saw and spoke with a great love from our past was on her parents porch, the front steps of her dorm, the hallway of an apartment, etc. I have always taken the lyrics "i've had my last chance on the stairway" to be a metapor for the very last time that we were given to say goodbye to that love in our life before heading off into the darkness. When I've daydreamed of my past lost loves I've often put this song on and relived those oh so sweet memories of that relationship that ended with "my last chance on the (proverbial) stairway".
