Fink – This Is The Thing lyrics
I don't know if you noticed anything different
It's getting dark and it's getting cold and the nights are getting long
I don't know if you even noticed at all
That I'm long gone baby, I'm long gone

And the things that keep us apart keep me alive and
The things that keep me alive keep me alone

This is the thing

I don't know if you notice anything missing
Like the leaves on the trees or my clothes all over the floor
I don't know if you'll even notice at all
Coz I was real quiet when I closed the door

And the things that keep us apart keep me alive and
The things that keep me alive keep me alone

This is the thing

I don't know if you notice anything different
I don't know if you even notice at all
I don't know if you notice anything missing

This is the thing: Sometimes we love someone. Sometimes they love us. But the love doesn't work. Because we all have things that keep us going, keep us alive-careers, passions, vocations- that don't always mix with those of the people we love. And in some ways, that can keep us alone. We live our passions, our careers, our vocations. We eat, sleep, breathe our work. And we can sometimes take for granted the things that brought love into our life can easily slip away. Without us ever even noticing until there's nothing to come home to anymore. Until the piles of dirty laundry that once brought irritation has dwindled down to your one load a week. It doesn't mean no one cared enough to try, it means no one knew how to balance being alive and being in love; how to combine passion to work with passion to simply be; how to be oneself fully and how to be with another as well. Tragic but true in so many instances.

I met someone under the craziest and most random of circumstances and we fell so hard and fast. It was exhilarating and frightening and wonderful and horrible. Then one day it fell apart, he walked out and said we were too different and it could never work. I guess there were too many things that ripped us apart despite how we felt for each other. We went through hell to be together and just when things had a chance of getting better, he gave up. I suppose I stopped being his priority, life got in the way. This is the thing, the most beautiful thing that I treasured slipped out of reach and I never saw it coming. I can't stop thinking about him. My heart's been ripped to pieces, the first time I've experienced such an intense feeling of loss and the worst part of it all is that I'm asking myself if he ever loved me. A part of me is too scared to know the answer to that.
