    Being a fan of country Music and having known songwriter Rex Griffin, had this song and The Last Letter in my mind as the same song? Such a "gaffe"! Rex did write Last Letter, but the very best version as done by Waylon Jennings. Conversely, Gene Watson's rendition of Farewell Party has not been equaled by any singer! Living or dead. As for the meaning, I personally feel that the two songs convey exactly the same meaning, She will be free when he's dead and gone. Rex's wife Margaret if she's still living, maybe still getting royalties from just that one song? Rex's health was iffy at best when I knew him in 1953, but he was still writing songs for Peer International, his publishing company. The ravages of type 1 diabetes, plagued him and he feared he wasn't long for this world at the time he wrote the song.
