Glen Hansard – The Hill lyrics
Walking up the hill tonight, and you have closed your eyes.
I wish I didn't have to make all those mistakes and be wise.
Please try to be patient and know that I'm still learning.
I'm sorry that you have to see the strength inside me burning.

Where are you, my angel, now? Don't you see me crying?
And I know that you can't do it all, but you can't say I'm not trying.
I'm on my knees in front of him, but he doesn't seem to see me.
With all his troubles on his mind, he's looking right through me.
And I'm letting myself down by satisfying you.
And I wish that you could see I have my troubles, too.

Looking at you sleeping, I'm with the man I know.
And I'm sitting here weeping, while the hours pass so slow.
And I know that in the morning I have to let you go.
And you'll be just a man once I used to know
Before these past few days; someone I don't recognize.
This isn't all my fault. When will you realize?

Looking at you leaving, I'm looking for a sign.

I think the singer is struggling with her decision to stay true to her husband. She knows the right thing to do is to stay strong, even though she's developed intense, loving feelings for the man she's been trying to help and he for her. Because she feels he is still pining for the girlfriend who left him, she knows she must let him go to try to work things out. Feel she also knows she owes it to herself and her little girl to try to mend the relationship she has with her husband. The whole situation is tearing her up and one can't help but feel the conflicting feelings within her she has kept secret all throughout the musical. It's so tempting for her to go to this new love, but deep down, her instincts tell her it's not right and won't work under the circumstances. Feel she's mourning what might have been between them- a profound, deep love. As she watches him go in her mind, she's looking for a sign that she's making the right decision.

She could be writing to two men - but she could be writing to just one. People change. Her "angel" is the man she loves - his sleeping face lets her see him as that person again. But when he wakes up, he's unkind, so different she hardly recognizes him. She searches herself for how to bridge the gap between them, but she also is tired of being told its all her fault. It fits with the movie's story, a young woman committed to marriage even though it's really bad. I know it's possible to feel all those things towards one person when your desire to be good and loyal wars with your battered heart, and your desire to be part of the solution wars with being expected to be the whole solution.

I thought I knew the man I loved for who he really was but he was just a liar. We shared so much together and one day he decided to break it to me that he never loved me like he said he did and he just left and I've never talked to him since. He was the perfect guy, I thought. I still have a part of me that loves him to this day.

This song was actually written by Marketa Irglova for the musical "Once", starring Glen Hansard. Irglova's character has been living in Dublin with her mother and young daughter. She recently befriended Hansard's character, who has recently been through a bad break up. He soon learns that she is actually married to a man in her home country. They were married young and grew apart but have not divorced. She shows Hansard's character this song and tells him it was written to her husband. The first verse is about the mistakes she made and how she is trying to fix them. The next section is about how her husband has not been there for her. She let herself down by giving her husband what he wanted at the expense of her happiness. I believe the last verse is about the moment she actually left her husband. She wants to be with him, but he's become someone she doesn't recognize.

I believe this has to do with a very sad break up. Just before relationships are about to end, they get really bad, and we hardly recognize who we have become, because now we are so angry or hurt. I think she is saying that now it is too little too late. She is digging deep to feel her love for him, remembering that it is there somewhere, but they have lost their relationship. She is ready to walk away, and accepting that it is not going to work out despite how hard she's tried. She says that he is just focusing on his own problems, and she has hers too. It seems they have broke their relationship, and she is sad about it, and looking to see if there is a sign of anything left, when it seems to be too late.

I can imagine this being a song about flashbacks. Like each part of the song shows a different time of the hill. When they play the after chorus, It would go back to the present of her crying. I'm writing a novel called the hill, and this song reminds me of it besides the name obviously. Each chapter I will include one line on this. But I think that this is more of a flashback of a child rather then a love story like how it is in the musical "Once". Maybe even the future will be explained. I do love the musical though, and I sang "Falling Slowly" at a talent show, and I got a standing ovation! All the songs are good, but I think this is the best song of all of them for Marketa Irglova to be singing by herself. Although it is actually a love story about Irglova's character and her husband, I think it has more potential of being a memoir or a nostalgic feeling of a young one. This song is so good, and it is like a metaphor that will never be deciphered. This is what I think of "The Hill" from "Once".

I thought I knew this guy until he suddenly was talking to me and showed me actually how vulnerable he was so I told him how vulnerable I was and we told each other secrets for the whole entire night. The next day he betrayed me and I cried for two weeks and he hasn't talked to me since. I still love the person I know he his, but he won't let show.
