The main character is a spy, his cover has been blown and he's been in a shootout. He's now holed up in a hotel room and looking to be extracted. But, his handler (connection) has decided to burn him and they don't plan to help, they're tired of taking chances. Because they've decided to drop him, nobody is making communication and he's wrapped in silence. They've changed the code they're using, so the coded messages he does receive he can't decode and has no idea what's happening.

When he realizes he's been hung out to dry, he has a surreal experience which causes him to have a sort of out of body experience, like he's watching himself from the 3rd person. Think of funhouse type wavy mirrors and screams, also a clone of him watching his story play out. He's moved into the Twilight Zone and the beacon he needs to return to reality has been moved, he can't find his way out.

Next there's foreshadowing of his impending doom, soon he will come to know when the bullet hits the bone.

Spiraling down to nowhere, self explanatory. He feels double crossed by his messenger (handler) and he's now alone. He can't make any connection with his normal contacts and wants to know why he's been abandoned. He obviously can't sleep and all the decisions he's made to get him here are causing anxiety (night weighs heavy on his guilty mind). He's deep in a foreign country and can't make a run by himself, he needs help (this far from the border line). It gets worse, not only are they leaving him blowing in the wind, now they've also decided to knock him off, when the hit man shows up, the spy knows he's getting a raw deal.

Wikipedia says this song is the sequel to Radar Love. Radar love appears to be a love song. As one lover races through the night to be with his mate. He hears a calling that makes him go to her. Twilight Zone, to me, is the story after he finds her. He is running from the law with a gun. I assume, he found his lover with someone else and he has shot them.
The line "My beacon's been moved under moon and star" kinda sounds line he is just running into what may seem like an endless night.

"This is a madhouse. Feels like being cloned." May mean he can't process what has happened, he acted on impulse and is "sitting beside himself" so to speak.

This is not a song about drugs or life on the road, etc.. Hate to bust any bubbles but that's the facts jack. It is all in first person because he's out on the road alone. This man has traveled out of its usual area and he is trying to figure things out but he's confused.

The song has hidden drug meanings like most songs of I's time. First, who is usually UP at 2 AM. In a Hotel Room? Drug Users.
He is Waiting the gun is still warm: he just shot up and is waiting for his high to kick in.

I cannot decode. He is trying to reach his connection on the phone, and he can not reach them and because he knows damn well he has been cheated, his last fix was no good. He can not decode: he can not figure out what to do.

The hit man is his drug dealer, his connection. When the Bullet hits the Bone, refers to when he inject his drugs. The bullet being the needle with drugs in it. Hitting the bone meaning when he injects.

Where am I to go now that my Beacon has been moved, Now that I have gone to far. Meaning he is far away from his usual connections and does not know where to go or who to call for more drugs.

I think everyone likes to associate this song to drugs which I totally understand given the lyrics but it was actually inspired by the book the Bourne Identity. Drugs weren’t the only thing going on in the 80’s…spys and fears of espionage were rampant. Whatever it means to anyone tho I have to say it’s just as awesome as it was when it was released and spent half a year in the top charts!
