Hop Along – Bruno Is Orange lyrics
Bruno, what did you tell that man?
He's a clever man, did you know?
I bet he works for the goverment
And I know you know I know
I can't control thoughts of things I needed
I believe everybody needs some encouragement

I think it's real unfair
That you should put him there
All we did is kiss
On my grave, I swear

Where did you find his shoes?
A lock of my hair?
All we did is kiss
On my grave, I swear

Some dull morning we were wearing sheets
And he whispered, "I think that they know better than me."
See this hand that pushed you into the creek?
I'm sorry, 'was just fun, and you were laughing
We were running towards the street
And I wrote my name into the fresh painted yellow line
And you wrote your name right there next to mine

We had to dodge a truck
He almost hit a bug
I think we had some luck
And for two bucks
We bought some bread
And fed the grey geese
And the ducks

Everyone will come
Everyone will yell
I'd thank you just the same
If you didn't tell
My mother says that i will surely go to hell
Please be a good man
Please say you won't tell

Did you know that that boy is an armed man?
Bearing flowers into hands
Very able to hold me down
(and love me more than anyone)
Bruno, what happened to your good sense?
I broke down, that man's good
I bet he works for the goverment

Did you hear about that mother?
Broke her daughter's legs in two
And said, "It's too dangerous out there to walk, so i had to save you."

I think it's real unfair
That you should put him there
All we did is kiss
On my grave, I swear
Where did you find his shoes?
A lock of my hair?
All we did is kiss
On my grave, I swear

Everyone will come
Everyone will yell
I'd thank you just the same
If you didn't tell
My mother says that i will surely go to hell
Please be a good man
Please say you won't tell

Bruno, did you know that the greeks in morning would eat oranges?
They were firm believers in fruit-curing fevers
And I agree
See, they believe that an orange warms the stomach

"Did you know that that boy is an armed man?
    Bearing flowers into hands
Very able to hold me down
(And love me more than anyone)
Bruno, what happened to your good sense?
I broke down, that man's good"

Makes me believe it's about an abusive relationship. Some people think it's about a forbidden interracial relationship, and some people think there is an age gap, but either way it sounds like he assualted get and her mum blamed her and called her a sinner. She's asking someone not to tell because everyone will come and be angry and make a scene (everyone will come, everyone will yell, I'd thank you just the same if you didn't tell) and she doesn't want him to be punished (I broke down, that man's good). It sounds like in an effort to protect her her mum hurt her (broke her legs in two and said "it's to dangerous out there to walk so I had to save you") which might be a metaphor for giving her no freedom or independence. A lot of people say it's a beautiful song and it is beautiful, but I think it's also very sad. She's struggling with her relationship, her mother, shame, and trying to protect this 'man' who sounds like he's hurt her and she can't come to terms with it. It's possible that Bruno is not actually the man, and is someone she's confided in or has found out, hence why she is begging him to keep quiet. Maybe that's what "where did you find his shoes, the lock of my hair?" It's referencing. No-one seems to know for sure though, everyone has a different interpretation that they are certain is right and I've not seen anything from the author

The part of the son that says: Bruno, did you know that the Greeks in morning would eat oranges?
They were firm believers in fruit-curing fevers
    And I agree
See, they believe that an orange warms the stomach'
means that Bruno is in prison now, and the POV this song is sung in wants Bruno to feel better about it. 'Orange' refers to the colour of the prison uniforms. Of course, we don't really know who Bruno is.
