Isis – In Fiction lyrics
Through fiction we saw The Birth
Of Futures Yet to come
Yet in Fiction lay the Bones
Ugly in their nakedness

Yet under this Mortal Sun
We cannot hide Ourselves

In fiction means to be in a story. The story here and the theme of the whole album seems to be based on what the philosopher, jeremy bentham describes as the panopticon, which is a circular shaped prison wherein only one guard is needed on each level to see all the prisoners. According to bentham we are all prisoners in this panopticon except that we don't know it and are happy to live and work within this prison of fictitious reality. The lyrics thus describe the way in which we see ourselves and our futures within this prison. It is ugly, bare and filled with hopelessness because no matter how hard we try we cannot escape the gaze of those who rule the panopticon and keep us trapped in fiction.
