I must have sang this song over a hundred times since I first heard it, but the true impact on me was on 2/1/2015. 2 daughters were going through turbulence in their marriages. I called on Jesus Christ very vehemently. Even though He assured me that He will restore both of them, I continued to be anxious and I asked Him for further assurance. My story is that we were going to move to a new home on February 1, 2015 and the weather forecast was that it would begin to snow by 3 pm. We had also reserved the truck for same time 3 pm. So I simply asked God to stay the sleet rain that was forecast until we're done with moving. Exactly at 9:30 pm after we closed our door after offloading our stuff, the sleet rain started. Then I knew that indeed I am A friend of god- because who am I among 7 billion people on earth that for such a simple & maybe 'trivial' matter like moving, that He heard me when I called!

This song was used in the kiddie classes to teach that God is their "FRIEND." That sort of bugged me on two different levels. (1) They were teaching "birthday party" friendship, not "got your back" friendship - and God's friendship is closer to the latter, [cf John 15:13] and (2) the lyrics are "I am a friend of God," and not "God is a friend of me," which is what they were telling the kids. True, friendship is often a two-way street, but that distinction is important if you are going to really understand the lyrics.
If "I am a friend of God," then I am obedient to what God asks of me. John 15:14 says, "You are my friends if you do what I command you." (ESV) And it is obedience from the heart of loving friend, not as a duty of a servant.
