Kero Kero Bonito – I'd Rather Sleep lyrics
[Verse 1]
I feel so funny these days
I'd rather sleep than stay awake
Trees used to talk to me
Now I know what's real and what is fake

Now I know what's real, what's fake
Rather sleep than stay awake

[Verse 2]
Are we from outer space?
This doesn't feel like the right place

And we'll try anything
Just to be a kid once again
Just to be a kid again

[Outro]
Now I know what's real, what's fake
Rather sleep than stay awake
Just to be a kid again

Here's a possible really dark alternative to the song.

"I feel so funny these days" Relates to depression, anxiety, possible drug or alcohol addiction.
"I'd rather sleep than stay awake" A metaphor for being suicidal. Sleeping being killing yourself, awake being alive.
"Trees used to talk to me" References old, childish fantasies with talking inanimate objects.
"Now I know what's real and what is fake" The singer has gained a sense of maturity she wishes she hadn't gained.
"Are we from outer space?" Is the singer trying to return to being a child again, despite having spent that precious time already.
"This doesn't feel like the right place" The singer's life has moved too fast, and she's not ready for adulthood.
"And we'll try anything" This ties into the next lyric.
"Just to be a kid once again" This verifies the singer's natural longing for childhood.

All in all, the singer is a depressed and stressed out individual. She isn't quite ready for what adulthood has to bring on for her, and she tries multiple ways to go back to being a child. She tries killing herself, drinking and doing drugs, locking herself in a fantasy world without contact with the real one, and many others.

I feel like this song deals with a mental illness like depression, the discomfort felt by child while growing up and the struggle to regain the sense of innocence lost once you become an adult.

The simplistic language used through the song is quite possibly a way to express the idea of the childish idealisation of sleep, which in this song is an analogy for death.

I think this song is about derealization like how the singer says “now know what’s real and what’s fake” and also because the song has this feeling where you don’t feel real. Still I think it’s a good song yet it may have a darker meaning but I’m not sure!!!

In my idea it can have 2 possiblity for the meaning first one is that possibly a person suffering from depression or a mental disorder and the 2nd one can be related dreamcore cause yk when you find wrong (fake) that leads you to knowing that you are dreaming. and yeah it gives me this feeling too

I think of this song when I’m suicidal. It reminds me of how time would reset as a child when you went to sleep and everything was okay again, except this time it isn’t when you get older. You want a prolonged sleep, the innocence of childhood being diluted by trauma and deep seated resentment. “Are we from outer space, this doesn’t feel like the right place” how did you get here? Why does everything feel so uncomfortable? Why can’t I recognize myself anymore.

I think these songs mean someone that suffers from schizophrenia due to the fact that he has illusions reason why he used to talk to trees. When the song talks about something that isn't feeling right probably the effects of the pills are fading out. I also think he wants to be innocent one more time that's why he wants to be a kid again.

I think this song means that when you grow up you realized the world isnt in rainbows and it's just real life like when you're a kid you're innocent, naive, creative and such but when you grow up everything is just about work n'stuff so you missed some stuff when you were a kid idk how to explain things I'm bad at explaining

When I heard the song I thought of many things but definitely not depression. I’m still a child right now and I don’t want my imagination to let me down. I think the song meaning should ing be so sad and is more about- well, more happy things. So yeah

I think this song is not about depression but at the same time kind of not, because wanting to be a kid again, knowing the difference between dreams a reality and preferring dream life then real life has something to do with getting older. But I do infer that it's about growing up and getting older and realizing dreams are fake, but now that your older you prefer dreams because life is hard or something about society and your dreams are kind of like your dream land?

I think “feeling funny these days” doesn’t mean drugs but how to feels to be grown up and “talk to trees” is probably a imaginary friend. I have many imaginary friends. And “now I know what’s real what’s fake” is about realizing the imaginary world is different from the real world. I like that song and I have a great imagination so this song makes me feel better. But hearing that meaning makes me just feel down again. This song has to have a more happy ending.

I think the song is about a person who lost their innocents at a very young age such as being in a broken family or abuses one but it gives me the vibes the adult can't cope so she wants an actual childhood in the lyric " trees used to talk to me" this may mean see only had her dreams to be the only thing she had as an actual thing that wasn't awful in her life. to be honest the song reminds me of a dreamcore song not gonna lye but then again it could be a child who wants to die cause the broken family I don't know
