Lately, I have been checking out some kiss concert footage on YouTube. Curiosity about who delilah was led me to an animated, YouTube video of the biblical story of samson and delilah. I was raised in the lutheran tradition, but only until I was about 13 years old. When I was 25, my mom left my dad and decided she wanted to live her life as a lesbian. I have since earned two bachelor of arts degrees and now believe in evolution. The song is obviously about gene's relationship with shannon, but I think this is only the tip of the iceberg. Knowing that it is completely normal for a man to have reservations about surrendering his independence to one woman, the struggle was probably magnified for a man in gene simmons' position. He created kiss and nurtured his business into a billion dollar company. Given his jewish heritage, the fact that he was raising children with a christian woman probably was a source of some stress. I am sure that creating music and writing lyrics provide gene with a creative outlet to deal with these inner conflicts. I just can't deny the synchronicity. The god of thunder struggling with male patterned baldness? The lyrics are smart, poignant and relevant to both modern relationships and world diplomacy.
