Aside from the biblical references (book of revelation chapter 6-8), it relates to african slaves brought to jamaica initially by the spanish, some of whom escaped and mixed with the indigenous taino tribes to form the maroons. The landscape of the jamaican interior provided a backdrop of opportunities for ambushes where the maroons were able to fight back against their oppressors (that is until around the end of 18th century when the british imported hundred of bloodhounds to hunt down the maroons). Where did they run to in the end? Most got deported first to nova scotia in canada and from there they got shipped to sugar colonies in sierra leone, west africa.
