M83 – Midnight City lyrics
Waiting in a car
Waiting for a ride in the dark
The night city grows
Look at the horizon glow

Waiting in a car
Waiting for a ride in the dark
Drinking in the lights
Following the neon signs

Waiting for the word
Looking at the milky skyline
The city is my church
It wraps me in the blinding twilight

Waiting in a car
Waiting for a ride in the dark
Waiting in a car
Waiting for a ride in the dark
Waiting in a car

Waiting for a ride in the dark
Waiting in a car
Waiting for a ride in the dark
Waiting in a car
Waiting for a ride in the dark

I think that this song is more of a self-exploration. Not about two people, but about finding the adventurer inside of you. Are you willing to take that chance and go where you don't know? Are you willing to seek out and experience everything the city has to offer? Stop waiting for a car that may or may not come, walk the streets and fall in love with all that is around you. Make those neon signs your cathedral and the skyline your alter. Fall in love with life and live your adventure.

When ur driving you feel free but in control to explore a new destination. But I don't think this has to with a car. I think this has to do with the want of freedom and a time where they felt free and they supress themselves with doubt of not being able to have that freedom and possibly turning to the influence of alcohol. However in their mind, they see what I see. When I heard this before even hearing the lyrics I imagined picking up my friends and going for a ride in a lit but somewhat dark platform, the harbor of new york city if you will. The outskirts of new jersy. The boonies of florida even. Animal eyes glow in the dark and while they might be metaphoring the street lights, I feel they may be talking about nocturnal animals in which we all know we have somewhat in us at some point. Riding in the dark, watching as dusk falls over the sky, and loving the city ur in is inspirational and when they heard the melody of this production, they had to of come to that first thought. I mean, I did.

As the song begins you immediately feel a sense of urgency. An overwhelming explosion of emotion comes at the end with the saxophone - ending the song, beautifully. "the city is my church"; a favorite lyric of mine, states that the listener perceives the city as his safe-haven - a place where he can freely express his faith; in partying. The overall meaning of this song is about, obviously, living in the night scene. Where a particular girl, who might be the very cause of this person waiting for the night to begin. His intrigue in her is heightened by light reflecting from her eyes.
I just can't say that I like this song. Oh no, that would be understating my opinion - I love this song.

The first time I hear this song it made me feel like taking a ride in my car at midnight down sunset blvd, west hollywood, and hollywood. Strangely enough as I researched the song further I came to find that its title and lyrics described exactly what I had envisioned. This is the song that now plays in my car as I am cruising down sunset blvd after dark. This is an awesome track showing the perfect combination of sounds and lyrics.

I the city being a woman that the man is desiring to be with, he is waiting for the right time, but he thinks about her, he is in love with her eyes and drawn by them. He wastes time so to speak going out at night, following neon signs, but she is on his mind and he awaits the day when he is finally with her, wrapped in the sparkling light that he see in her eyes. Same goes, for the city being his church, she is the city in analogy, the place he finds himself whole or safe.

This song speaks to me. And I think it has a special meaning because of the mood and the key chosen for the song. It's mysterious. I think it's about a deep feeling the writer has inside that their fate is to live in and love the city life, the night life. Only few are chosen and they're realizing this now, that they are something different and they have influence. Their purpose is to play music for people, which usually happens in the evening in a city.

The city represents love and midnight represents "lack of knowledge" (blindness); the man is ignorant of the contents of her love. The car represents the action of "taking a chance". The first verse says "waiting in a car... Waiting for a ride in the dark", meaning he's waiting for a chance to figure out the contents of her love. "the night city grows", meaning his lack of knowledge continues to grow.

Maybe he is talking about a place that he feels safe. He is waiting in the car at night in this lonely city. There is a storm coming (looking at the mutating skyline) and he knows that there is always somewhere to stay dry in a place that never sleeps. He can find somewhere to feel comfortable and be himself. But something is stopping him. Keeping him from finding that place where he feels safe.

It's about a man. A man who is writing. A man who is writing while waiting in a car and intoxicated for a unidentified person to drive him home. Actually this could be a woman or an emotionally thinking male due to their personality and pov of desiring comfort hence "wraps me with sparkling light. "
I wrote this poem in toronto and had no idea it existed until I needed lyrics to this song. Power people and cities are god.

Its almost like it wants you to feel nostalgic and to feel the yearning of the years before. Its makes me happy and sad, excited yet depressed all at the same time. And when the sax kicks in at the end its like it reasures me everything will be okay. To me it littaraly feels like I'm visiting some new city with bright neon light and an enitre new race of people that stop stare and ask where have you been? And welcome back to your true home. It makes me wonder if I am really meant to be part of where I am now or should I be waiting on that care to take me to the night city. This song is just instellar and beyond.

Likley meaning of lyrics irrespective of the video would suggest someone is going out on the town and the anticipation and or waiting in the car at the approaching dusk and night; surrounded by all that which excites him, is triggering the human urges that any good time would infuse into someone. Pure human tendencies towards intoxication into substance and fellow companionship. This song needs more verses such as first three which are so perfect in form and structure for this beat.

I interpreted the poem as a person going into a brothel and getting what he wanted, then leaving. "the night city grows(his evil side leads him to bad places). Look and see her eyes, they glow(he sees the girl he wants). Drinking in the lounge(obvious). Following the neon signs(he is going to the room with the girl). Looking at the mutating skyline(he is drunk and looking out the window or something). The city is my church(the brothel is like a religion to him, he goes to it on a weekly basis). It wraps me in the sparkling twilight(the girl has sex with him). " then he is waiting for his ride at the right time. "waiting for a ride in the dark. "

So I see it as a person who is very introspective and wanting something to happen, looking for something to happen on this earth. Waiting for it- expecting it. I see them out- alone - at night dip into a bar- but just people watching. Trying to see inside them. Then it happens - they walk outside and the night parts-"waiting for a roarlooking at the mutating skylinethe city is my churchit wraps me in the sparkling twilight"the aliens come and take them away. I say "them' but really I do see I guy. This is my version of the meaning as I 'see' it. ~sparrow.
