Matchbox Twenty – How Far We've Come lyrics
Hello, hello, hello

I'm wakin' up at the start of the end of the world
But it's feeling just like every other morning before

Now I wonder what my life is gonna mean if it's gone

The cars are moving like a half a mile an hour and I
Started staring at the passengers and waving goodbye
Can you tell me what was ever really special about me all this time?

But I believe the world is burning to the ground
Oh well, I guess we're gonna find out
Let's see how far we've come

Let's see how far we've come

Well I believe it all is coming to an end
Oh well, I guess we're gonna pretend

Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come

I think you turn, turn the clock, but I don't really know
And I can't remember caring for an hour or so
Started crying and I couldn't stop
myself
I started running but there's nowhere to run
to

I sat down on the street, took a look at myself
Said, “Where you going man, you know the world is headed for hell
?
Say your goodbyes if you got someone you can say goodbye
to

I believe the world is burning to the ground
Oh well, I guess we're gonna find out
Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come

Well I believe it all is coming to an end
Oh well, I guess we're gonna pretend
Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come

It's gone, gone, baby, it's all gone
There's no one on the corner
And there's no one at
home
Well it was cool cool, it was just all cool
Now it's over for me, and it's over for
you

Well it's gone, gone, baby, it's all gone
There's no one on the corner
And there's no one at home
Well it was cool cool, it was just all cool
Now it's over for me, and it's over for you

I believe the world is burning to the ground
Oh well, I guess we're gonna find out
Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come

Yeah well, I believe it all is coming to an end
Oh well, I guess we're gonna pretend
Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come

Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come

Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come

Honestly I think you all have the wrong Idea. This whole song is about how even though the world and how humanity is all crumbling it's about looking back and looking forward to see how we can survive it. We can't turn back our clocks to how times were then as to now. We can only sit and see how this world once was and seeing what changed in order to bring forth a better change. that's what this whole song is about. I mean you all have convincing arguments and replies but this isn't about what made this world go to hell and what happened. And when he says "Cars are moving at an half hour or so" it's showing that even though times have changed how far we have come change can only be brought by looking at how times once were compared to now so we can reflect on ourselves in order to make this world better so that this world can live and be good again instead of it burning to the ground.

I think that this song is a reference to how humankind has very harshly destroyed our world, Earth, and how if we do not work on a way to better our planet, we will soon be found in ruins. I think that it is also a reference to how inhumane mankind is, and how there is so much violence, mayhem, and destruction that everything is as good as gone, even if mankind denies it, or tries to ignore the cruel fact that we are nearing the end, not because of anyone else's fault, but because of our own.

While to many it means the obvious, that the world is ending, its open ended, like stated by Jimmysmith, it can be about economy, relationship, gambling, drinking, etc. "I think it turned ten o' clock but i don't really know how" can mean that he's been lingering so much on his particular habit that nothing else exists and lost track of time. "say your goodbyes if you've got some one you can say goodbye to", guess it means that when he finally snapped out of it and got his feet on the ground he was all alone, he drove everyone away from him. Then he must think, 'o well I'm screwed, lets see what happnes\'.

This song is very deep- riding as it did on the wave of global environmental awareness. Rob Thomas's despondency stems from the current critical mass reached about global warming and how far humanity has come only to s*w up the only planet we come. Lines like ":cars are moving at an half an hour or so" only serves to reiterate how far we've come technologically but never really going anywhere. Lines like "I beleive the world is burning to the ground" and "it was cool, cool it was just all cool" emphasise the global warming meaning again. Its also a metaphor for a world awashed in terrorism, war and selfishness. But all in all its a song about hope- cuz really we've have come pretty far as a species.
