Quite obviously about a person who doesn't ant to live anymore for whatever reason. They decide to kill themselves and say goodbye to the world. They figure there's no point in living anymore and they shouldn't even bother trying to get help because they don't matter. When tie comes, they just know that they're not worth life and the past doesn't matter anymore, so they "say goodbye".
This is one of the most amazing, incredible songs I've ever heard. Metallica is one of the best - if not the best - classic metal-rock bands that you could possibly listen to. The guitar. It's absolutely fitting to the song and gives a perfect atmosphere! :)

This song was created by james hetfield after the band had all there stuff stolen, guitars, drums, mics absolutly everything and they felt like there lives had just been stolen with it. James hetfield if I remember rightly said he thought about suicide however picked himself up and carried on. The man is the biggest inspiration in my life, how soneone who has lost everything can carry on, it helped me fight my depression.

This is how I felt before jesus found me. My life had no purpose, I don't think I had one friend I could count on, and I was angry with all the things that has happened to me in the past, and I had regret for thing that I have done. I was going to school, had a job and made money but it wasn't enough to fill this emptiness inside me, the true loving I needed. I just died inside, and if I did die it wouldn't have mattered. I was going crazy, drinking, and smoking. I just wanted to be free, but I was slave to my sins like anger, lust, greed, envy, and other sins controlled my life, and I was not happy. This song talks about reaching a low point in life and coming to a realization that everything under the sun is meaningless and will never satisfy you. I couldn't stand this hell that was inside of me. Jesus was my way out. Thank god for jesus.
