Moriarty – Jimmy lyrics
Jimmy won't you please come home
Where the grass is green and the buffaloes roam
Come see Jimmy your uncle Jim Your auntie Jimmie and your cousin Jim
Come home Jimmy because you need a bath
And your grandpa Jimmy is still gone daft

Now there's buffalo Jim and buffalo Jim
And Jim buffalo now didn't you know
Jim Jim Jimmy its your last cigarette
But there's buffalo piss and it's all kind of wet
Jambo Jimmy you'd better hold your nose
All roads lead to roam with the buffaloes

And the Buffaloes used to say be proud of your name
The Buffaloes used to say be what you are
The Buffaloes used to say roam where you roam
The Buffaloes used to say do what you do

Well you've gotta have a wash but you can't clean your name
You're now called Jimmy you'll be Jimmy just the same
The keys are in a bag in a chest by the door
One of Jimmy's friends has taken the floor
Jimmy won't you please come home
Where the grass is green and the buffaloes roam
Dear old Jimmy you've forgotten you're young
But you can't ignore the buffalo song

And the Buffaloes used to say be proud of your name
The Buffaloes used to say be what you are
The Buffaloes used to say roam where you roam
The Buffaloes used to say do what you do
If you remember you're (unkown / a gnome / a Noam)
Buffaloland will be your home

I don't know. To me this song feels like an old woman trying to call her son back to his roots on a buffalo ranch. It seems to suggest many reasons why he would leave in the first place; the family relating buffalo's more than each other and the obsession with the name Jimmy. I think it is saying that even if you aren't proud to be from the family you are from you can't hide for ever and eventually your past will catch up with you so make the most of what you have got.

I'm an old man, but to me it means. Some young men choose to roam away from home with wanderlust. Like the "prodigal son" they leave home and family to "do what they do". These youngsters sometimes forget their roots, extended family, friends and the lifestyle they learned as youths. They need to remember and come home sometime soon. Or, like the buffalo, their family and heritage may face extinction. I heard this group at montreal jazz festival june, 2012 for the first time. Not my idea of jazz but great entertainment and good for the soul.

To me this beautiful song is ironical. Jimmy's folks can't understand Jimmy's decision to leave his family, a family of people doing the same thing everyday, being the same people, never changing, never evolving. Buffaloes are their life, buffaloes are their legacy, they are same with the buffaloes. They call him back because they truly believe Jimmy will eternally be the same Jimmy just like them. They truly believe he will be unhappy out there. They project their loss of him, on him.
"Where the grass is green and the buffaloes roam" they truly believe this is the only way to happiness.

The buffaloes words on the other hand are ambiguous. They could mean you should always carry your legacy with you. But they could also mean, you should be proud of yourself no matter what your family is. You should "be what you are", "roam where you roam" and "do what you do".

For such simplicity I find this song very profound. My take on it is that we all try to leave home and make better names for ourselves by going to the big city. Jimmy doesn't realize that in the process he is forgetting his past and roots. The repetitive use of Jimmy shows that he is part of a whole and not separate, although he wants to be so. Like the Buffalo in the early 19th and 20th centuries the Jimmy family way of life has been sidestepped by progress and industrialization. Maybe he's realizing this or maybe it's his mother singing but I feel this song is a nostalgic ode to a much simpler time.

The lyrics seem to contemplate fate, suggesting that being born as ‘Jimmy’ predetermines one’s identity through life and across generations. There’s an existential beauty in this idea, implying that even if we lose our sense of self, we remain ‘Jimmy’ like everyone else, and there’s pride and inevitability in this shared destiny.
