Loneliness. Back then when he wrote the song, lots of things were different. Imagine, rents being low in Los Angles! Moving away from family and friends to establish new people in your life involves starting off new and lonely. At times you question yourself, should I move back to familarity or follow your dreams. It's a person caught between following your dreams which sometimes meaning leaving the familiar and comfortableness of life. And lonliness because there you have to start making friends again.

Sounds like to me he is singing about empty chair therapy. Empty chair therapy is popular among Psychologist. It consists of an empty chair and the patient pretends like someone is sitting in the chair and they say everything they have been wanting to say to the person pretended in the chair but couldn't.

These are the words of a man who is ready to hear the Gospel. All of us are lost because of sin since all are sinners (which is what the Bible declares). However, we suppress this truth with desperate grabs at things to fill the emptiness in our lives which can only be filled by God through Jesus Christ who is God in the flesh, come to die for our sin and take away the emptiness and give real meaning. These lyrics honestly state the true condition of every man which even fame and fortune cannot cure only God.
