Nightwish – The Crow, The Owl And The Dove lyrics
Don't give me love, don't give me faith
Wisdom nor pride, give innocence instead
Don't give me love, I've had my share
Beauty nor rest, give me truth instead

A crow flew to me, kept it's distance
Such a proud creation
I saw it's soul, envied it's pride
But needed nothing it had

An owl came to me, old and wise
Pierced right through my youth
I learned it's ways, envied it's sense
But needed nothing it had

Don't give me love, don't give me faith
Wisdom nor pride, give innocence instead
Don't give me love, I've had my share
Beauty nor rest, give me truth instead

A dove came to me, had no fear
It rested on my arm
I touched it's calm, envied it's love
But needed nothing it had

A swan of white, she came to me
The lake mirrored her beauty sweet
I kissed her neck, adored her grace
But needed nothing she could give

Gar tuht river, Get te rheged
Gar tuht river, Get te rheged
Gar tuht river, Get te rheged

Gar tuht river, Get te rheged
Gar tuht river, Get te rheged
Gar tuht river, Get te rheged

Don't give me love, don't give me faith
Wisdom nor pride, give innocence instead
Don't give me love, I've had my share
Beauty nor rest, give me truth instead

Considering that the album "imaginaerium" by nightwish is about childhood memories and attributed feelings I think this song might adress something like that as well. All these different birds are symbols of aspects in everyone's life that often leave us grieving: love broke your heart, your desire for beauty might not be fulfilled, wisdom is never quite accomplished because nobody can know everything. As a consequence we long for the pureness and perfectness of the inner child's heart, the freedom we once felt. Truth and innocence.

There are some odd interpretations here, many of which miss the mark. "... Honest heart is more important than beauty,... " its more that morality is more important than the fickle ways of the heart (love) than beauty. "to me it means to live and learn from nature... "
close, but nightwish isn't heavily environmentalist. (at least one is christian, and these lyrics fit the themes he usually writes about.)
"two people that are... In truth, honesty, and real love. " no, no, no, no. Not at all. This song is about a return to how man was before the fall. To return to a sinless world, where it is not the fickle ways of the mind and the heart that are followed, but the way of the soul. Innocence in the land of eden. After all, it doesn't say, "got to grieve her, got to wreck it," but "gar tuht river, ger te rheged. " go to the river, go and find a fairyland.

I feel like this song is more about the lost joy of innocence. Younger children see things for what they are. As you grow older you begin to want love, wisdom, beauty, and want to be confident, but even with all that you'll never be as happy as you were before. "don't give me love, don't give me faith" just don't sound like the words to a love song to me. Just my interpretation.

I think that all are part of life and once you surround yourself truth and innocence, you alienate yourself from the world you live, thus becoming more alone and that is not always the right thing. We are here, all of us, the good and the bad to learn from each other, and to become the best of what we are, and sometimes we need to learn all aspects and after all what is life without love? A love that doesn't ask for love back, the one that transforms. So. Never give up! Love's fire transforms us from worthless clay into a beautiful tool in the hands of time.

A lot of nightwish's songs have very different meanings based upon who you are, where you are in life and even just the daily feelings when you heard it. Even when the song was being written the meaning could have changed. This is why nightwish as a group will always be masterful story tellers and be remember years from now. So I think its unfair to say anyone misses the mark and to do so means you've missed the point of what good deep rooted art really is, who cares what it means to any one person because it has a meaning to begin with.

"got to grive it, got to wreck it"
    Is actually:.
"gar tuht river. Ger te rheged"
Which means: go to the river, you will arrive at a fairyland.
I noticed it looked similar to welsh, but couldn't understand it so searched other celtic languages. It's cumbric, which is now extinct. I found from another website what it means.
This song is beautiful. It has a lot of meanings depending on how you interpret it.

Following up on my previous post, I found another comment that misses the mark.
"i think that all are part of life and once you surround yourself truth and innocence, you alienate yourself from the world you live, thus becoming more alone and that is not always the right thing. "
    Somehow, this misses the mark.
The truth is this: a man who hates truth and innocence cannot be saved by love. For if one is intent on hell, will that one love heaven if it were forced upon him? You may present innocence and truth to one, but if you follow that person out of truth and innocence in the name of "love," you are dooming them as well as yourself. And if "love" destroys the object of its affection, is it not love in name only?
