Norah Jones – American Anthem lyrics
All we've been given
By those who came before
The dream of a nation
Where freedom would endure
The work and prayers
Of centuries

Have brought us to this day

What shall be our legacy?
What will our children say?
Let them say of me
I was one who believed
In sharing the blessings
I received
Let me know in my heart
When my days are through
America
America
I gave my best to you

Each generation from the plains
To distant shore with the gifts
They were given
Were determined
To leave more
Battles foughts together
Acts of conscience fought alone
These are the seeds
From which America has grown

Let them say of me
I was one who believed
In sharing the blessings
I received
Let me know in my heart
When my days are through
America
America
I gave my best to you

For those who think
They have nothing to share
Who fear in their hearts
There is no hero there
Know each quiet act
Of dignity is
That which fortifies
The soul of a nation
That never dies

Let them say of me
I was one who believed
In sharing the blessings
I received
Let me know in my heart
When my days are through
America
America
I gave my best to you

America
America
I gave my best to you

I was viewing Ken Burns documentary "War" and heard this song. It touched me as no song did. It brought to me the thoughts of brave men and women and how so many sacrificed that I can have the blessings of this wonderful nation. How freedom has never been free, and how God has bless each and every person born in this nation. I am 65 years old and I knew many of those men who fought and died for my right to have an opinion, to attend worship, to gather to discuss our differences. We now live in a nation that is divided by the differences but if we can just put that aside for a moment and see how fortunate we are. If we can just give our best, stop majoring on the minors, then we can sing together as a free and grateful nation ready to make America great again.

i968 was the most costly year in the Vietnam War with the loss of 16.900 of those who gave their very best to our country-their lives. In 1968, Donald Trump was granted a 1-Y medical deferment based on a physician's letter to his draft board about a bone spur on his heel. Our Commander-in-Chief could not recall the name of the physician nor on which heel the spur was on or both heels. He had already received multiple educational deferments. According to Trump, his "personal Vietnam" was avoiding "sexually transmitted diseases." He has placed wreaths at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington twice. Will he have the solipsistic audacity to pay empty homage to the 58,000 whose names are immortalized at the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, when he was willing to serve by their side?
