Peter, Paul & Mary – Puff, The Magic Dragon lyrics
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
Little Jackie paper loved that rascal puff,
And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff. Oh

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.

Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail
Jackie kept a lookout perched on puffs gigantic tail,
Noble kings and princes would bow whene'are they came,
Pirate ships would lower their flag when puff roared out his name. Oh!

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.

Dragons live forever but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant's rings make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more
And Puff that mighty dragon, he
ceased his fearless roar.

His head was bent in sorrow, green
scales fell like rain,
Puff no longer went to play
along the cherry lane.
Without his life-long friend, puff could not be brave,
So puff that mighty dragon sadly
slipped into his cave. Oh!

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist
in a land called Honah Lee.

It's a childrens song. It was a time when innocence was lost. It was ripped apart by the people wanting to make a drug song out of it. People who were looking for cutesy little words to call weed instead of calling it what it was. Looking for songs to snicker at. I never got in to the stupidity of the times. "everybody" wasn't doing it. "puff" is a happy song. I sing it to my grandchildren.

My mother recently died. On the coldest of mornings at the bus stop, she would sing the song using her breath as puff. I would giggle so much. It made the bus come quickier. Lately, my daughter learned the song at school and rekindled the song. When I graduated from college, she gave me a music box with the song. It is one of my happiest childhood memories. I learned my childhood didn't end. It was just waiting for another little one to sing the song. I love you, Mom!

I was a hippy in the sixties but have never dealt in drugs of any sort. We did NOT all do it. Puff was thought to be a children's song nothing more. Often folks read into the lines what they wanted to. Used to love listening to Peter, Paul and Mary lovely harmony.

Jackie Paper was a lonely youngster who played with his stuff toy, Puff the Magic Dragon. When he reached puberty, he became interested in girls and no longer played the imaginary seafaring game with Puff. This is the transition from the age of innocence, when boys and girls played hide and seek together and the boys played touch football and little league. At puberty, boys lose their playmates shift their interests to girls. Then one day, you have a crush on a girl and fantasize a courtship like Romeo and Juliet. All of a sudden, you forget about Puff who was tossed into the toy box along with the squirt gun, the bicycle helmet, plastic bat, and Robbie the Robot.

I have mixed feelings about this song. One part of me thinks that it was written as a children's song. Maybe it is just about a boy and his imaginary dragon. But, another part of me thinks the obvious thing. Its about pot. I mean, come on, "puff," "honah lee," "cherry lane?" All things asociated with pot. And by the way, it was the pot smoking 60's. Nobody would've noticed a song about pot, because they were all high on it when it came out! Nevertheless of the controversy, I love this song! Very sad though.

I was born 1937 a time of cars w/o radios. My aunt and uncle sang to us while driving. One song was about a little boy who finnaly put away his toys never to return. It was a sad song. Sounded like puff. My grandmother said they sang it alot because their only child, a boy lived only a few days. The song writer is only 4 years younger than I, perhaps he also heard a simular song in his youth.
