Religious Music – My God And I lyrics
My God and I go in the field together;
We walk and talk as good friends should and do;
We clasp our hands, our voices ring with laughter;
My God and I walk through the meadow's hue.
We clasp our hands, our voices ring with laughter;
My God and I walk through the meadow's hue.

He tells me of the years that went before me
When heavenly plans were made for me to be;
When all was but a dream of dim reflection;
To come to life, earth's verdant glory see.
When all was but a dream of dim reflection;
To come to life, earth's verdant glory see.

My God and I will go for aye together,
We'll walk and talk just as good friends do;
This earth will pass, and with it common trifles,
But God and I will go unendingly.
This earth will pass, and with it common trifles,
But God and I will go unendingly.

    Some believe in a vengeful God, but this is my God - my friend, my safe sanctuary, and my source of never ending, unconditional love.
    He is always with me, and always will be, helping me through difficult times and celebrating the happy times. I love the concept of my hand in His!

    This was a, song my mother loved to sing as far back as I can remember. She would sing it as she played the organ. At her memorial service the pianist had to search for the lyrics but he sang it and played it at her memorial service. Now she is in Heaven with her Saviour and my dad.

    When I was a young child (third grade?) living on Thrush Avenue, my classmate and friend, Margaret Jones, lived across the street. Her father, Franklin Jones, worked at the bank and gave voice lessons in the front music room of their home (One of his students was Lottie.) He was involved in music at Grace Lutheran Church at the corner of Illinois and Dechman where Pastor Trady pastored. Margaret invited me to Sunday School with the family and in summer she invited me to Vacation Bible School. The California bus went by our house so, young as we were, we caught it and rode to the church and home. Eventually I began going to Saturday choir practice where Mrs. Burgy directed the Junior Choir. On Sundays, wearing our choir robes and carrying fine folders for our music, we walked in the processional down the aisle to the choir stalls adjacent to the platform. “My God and I” is the only choral piece I remember. The words of the second stanza, expressed thoughts I had not thought of, but they broke my heart then and they break my heart now.

    He tells me of the years that went before me
    When heavenly plans were made for me to be
    When all was but a dream of dim conception;
    To come to life, earth's verdant glory see.

    It had never occurred to me, a third-grade child, that God thought of me before I was born, that He had a plan for me to even be, exist—which meant that He knew me on some intimate level that I longed for, though I hadn’t known even existed. He knew me when; He knows me now; He’ll know me then. I’m 82 now, so “then” is sooner now than it was yesterday; earth loses its hold on me day by day unto the Eternal Day.

    As I was practicing the piano one day my father came into the room and handed me the music for "My God and I". He told me to learn to play it as it was one of his favorites. Over the years I have been able to share this Hymn with many people who have said they had never heard it before. "Where can I get the music?' was often asked. I was able to tell my family that this was my father's favorite and was able to find a gentleman that knew my father and sang it at the graveside service for my father. Recently my husband shared it with our church members and again I was asked for the words.
