Religious Music – The Old Rugged Cross lyrics
On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
The emblem of suffering and shame;
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best,
For a world of lost sinners was slain
.
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down,
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it someday for a crown.

Oh, that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above,
To bear it to dark Calvary.
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down,
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it someday for a crown.

In the old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine
Such a wonderful beauty I see
For 'twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died
To pardon and sanctify me.
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down,
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it someday for a crown.

To the old rugged cross I will ever be true,
It's shame and approach gladly bear
;
Then He'll call me someday to my home far away,
Where His glory forever I'll share.
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down,
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it someday for a crown.

    This song was sung at my fathers memorial. It was his favorite we always knew this song would be played for him, the meaning to me is to always to love and cherish God our Lord and Savour. He will always be there I thank the Lamb for paying our sins. My father was loved by every one he met. He has traded his cross for his crown! God bless and keep you.

    The Roman cross of death was anything but beautiful. The offender died a slow and very painful death. But to those who know the redemptive value of the blood that was shed on the "Old Rugged Cross" of Christ, there is nothing more wondrous. It is the ultimate sacrifice of love. The cost to "pardon and sanctify me."

    Without Jesus and the old rugged cross none of us would have a chance for redemption, God loved us so much that he provided a way to eternal life through his son Jesus Christ. I thank God from everything that is in me for Jesus and the old rugged cross. Now through Jesus Christ our slates can be wiped clean from sin and we can be washed and purified and cleansed from all sin. Through Jesus we have been born again, praise be to our God the I AM, the one who was before anything else was. Thank you Jesus for paying the ultimate price for us all.

    My favorite. 3rd verse 2nd line should be reproach, not approach. Makes a little difference. That's my favorite verse and I've played this on the piano so many times. My mother sang this home often! Yes, we cherish the old rugged cross, because we hardly understand or can really comprehend what it means, but our Lord laid his life down for us. What a Savior!

    In verse 3 shame and approach should be shame and reproach.
    Jesus took my shame, my sin, my life and died for me. Because I believed and called out to Him, He loved me, he washed me clean and all those old ways of my life were changed by His blood. Except for that old rugged cross upon which Jesus died I would be lost and miserable. When I believed and called on Him , he rescued me and gave me new life.
