Rosanne Cash – Seven Year Ache lyrics
You act like you were just born tonight
Face down in a memory but feeling all right
So who does your past belong to today?
Baby, you don't say nothing when you're feeling this way

The girls in the bars thinking, "who is this guy?"
But they don't think nothing when they're telling you lies
You look so careless when they're shooting that bull
Don't you know heartaches are heroes when their pockets are full

Tell me you're trying to cure a seven-year ache
See what else your old heart can take
The boys say, "when is he gonna give us some room"
The girls say, "god I hope he comes back soon"

Everybody's talking but you don't hear a thing
You're still uptown on your downhill swing
Boulevard's empty, why don't you come around?
Baby, what is so great about sleeping downtown?

Plenty of dives to be someone you're not
You say you're looking for something you might've forgot
Don't bother calling to say you're leaving alone
'Cause there's a fool on every corner when you're trying to get home

Just tell 'em you're trying to cure a seven-year ache
See what else your old heart can take
The boys say, "when is he gonna give us some room"
The girls say, "god I hope he comes back soon"

Tell me you're trying to cure a seven-year ache
See what else your old heart can take
The boys say, "when is he gonna give us some room"
The girls say, "god I hope he comes back soon"

Why do so many people think this song is about a man? Roseanne Cash wrote and sings this song from a woman's point of view. It's an imaginary conversation with her lover in a failing relationship, a conversation in which her tone moves from mocking ('heartaches are heroes when their pockets are full"), to cautionary ("everybody's talking but you don't hear a thing"), to indignant ("don't bother calling to say you're leaving alone"), to longing ("why don't you come around?").

This is a story about a man who is trying to forget a woman who broke his heart, years ago. So he goes to bars, gets drunk, picks up random women. The men think he's competition and want him to leave. The women want him but not in a good way? They want his money, attention, etc. , but they don't care about him. The man thinks he can forget her through meaningless, anonymous s** and booze and waking up in strange places "downtown. " but it isn't working -- whoever is singing the song to him, is telling him to stop destroying himself.

I’d say the first verse is a woman watching her man from across a room and how he is acting different and lighter around other women, while blaming it on his innocence and their smooth words and BS. Second verse seems to be her imagining his nights downtown and starting to shift blame to him a little. Chorus is what she hopes is a best case scenario type thing.

Second verse seems to switch blame for sure. First verse he was the fool being taken advantage of by suave women, second verse it’s the women”folks on every corner” who are being used by him and she’s let go ie: last chorus changes to “tell em” instead of “tell me. “
