The Civil Wars – Poison & Wine lyrics
You only know what I want you to
I know everything you don't want me to
Your mouth is poison, your mouth is wine
You think your dreams are the same as mine

Oh, I don't love you, but I always will
Oh, I don't love you, but I always will
I don't love you but I always will
I always will

I wish you'd hold me when I turn my back
The less I give, the more I get back
Oh, your hands can heal, your hands can bruise
I don't have a choice but I still choose you

Oh, I don't love you, but I always will
Oh, I don't love you, but I always will
I don't love you, but I always will
Oh, I don't love you, but I always will
I don't love you, but I always will
I don't love you, but I always will
I don't love you, but I always will
I always will

I always will
I always will
I always will
I always will

This is supposedly the last dialogue between two souls, the ones who after having searched for each other, finally have found each other, but have to part ways now. Each of them reasons that their emotions are what they choose to express (or what hey chose to hide), deep down the other one knowing the meaning of all words spoken, as well as the silences between them. Although they say they "don't love" each other, while their hearts resonate in unison that they "always will". For things made as one, what is fate to separate!

To me, this sounds like marriage. We sometimes come to a point in which we feel trapped. We weant to escape, but deep down we know we either can't or don't really want to. When we fight and we turn our backs on each other, what we really want is that person to hold us until we can't be upset anymore, but sometimes we get more out of being stubborn, and not giving in to emotion. Fighting is exhausting, and sometimes it is easier to hide our feelings away, which also means we sometimes fall out of love.

He's confused. He's trying to hide his feelings from her, but she's figured him out. He can't decide if she's the best thing for him or the worst. Ultimately, he loves her, but he doesn't know if he really wants to be with her. She's trying to hold onto him because she can't help but want him. In the end, all you have is undying love. Whether that love is realized or not, is another story.

I think its about a couple- man and wife- who once loved deeply. The man strays from the wife, who has been very good to him and loved him deeply. He now loves another- but can't or wont let go of his wife. The mans new relationship is new and exciting. But husband fears losing wife and finding out the new relationship is nothing more than an exciting fling. Husband lies to wife, but she is so intune to him that she knows all his lies.

I believe this is the norm in a long term marriage when you are not well matched. I was married to the wrong person for 25 years. We started out young and ignorantly bliss, then 2 wonderful kids came along and things got much more complicated. Over time, unfortunately it became a love hate relationship. Despite feeling trapped, we both gave it our best for years. Ultimately it didn't last. So, this song resonates.

This is the anthem of a long term marriage. It is beautiful and so true. "i don't have a choice but i still choose you. " wow! In marriage there is constant give and take. There is so much dissapointment and total bliss. It is just a fact. I have been married to my very favorite person for 10 years, and this song is such a reminder about why marriage is so incredible. We choose to love. Many times we love one another despite how we want to act. Love is a choice and act. Love starts to grow when you realize that your partner will love you no matter what.
