The Men – Candy lyrics
-Verse-
I just quit my job now,
I can stay out all night long.
Where my mind is tomorrow,
It don't matter til the dawn.

Can go to a million places,
Could sing a thousand songs,
Until my mind is made up,
I'll be really really gone.

When was the last time,
You were able to take a breath.
To not give in, be sore as sin,
Or to be a nervous wreck.

I've been to the darkest places,
I've been a total mess.
I picked up what I could,
And I laughed off all the rest.

-Chorus-
When I hear the radio play
I don't care that it's not me.
Remember the days I'd shout anything
For you to see me.

I could never sing
Now my voice is free.

Now my voice is...

This is a song about growing up and accepting responsibility for one's dreams and desires. The singer starts out by confessing he has quit his job. Therefore he is free to be who he wants to be, a professional musician who can, "go to a million places, sing a thousand songs. "
The chorus is perhaps the most touching part of this song. With the line "when i hear the radio play... " he is saying he doesn't care that he's not "famous" in the conventional, pop sense of the word. He gets to do what he loves and that's enough. He's also speaking to an old lover, saying "remember when i'd shout anything for you to see me. I could never sing but now my voice is free. " this is a common feeling once people have passed out of adolescence into adulthood: the desire to say to certain people from our pasts, 'hey look, I was awkward and desperate back then, but I'm a success now. '
He's grown up. He has become an adult, a man. He does what he wants, on his own terms. If that means getting crazy and living on the fringe, then so be it. Until he "makes his mind up" about whatever, he'll be "really really gone. " he may live this way forever, he may never come back from the edge, but he's not making any promises either way.
