This song is from the perspective of a pharisee, one of the hypocritical religious leaders whom jesus condemned. It may be specifically from the perspective of saul (later called paul), who was blinded by a vision of jesus on the road to damascus. "whitewash" and "dead bones inside" refer to matthew 23: 27, and "child of hell" in the second stanza (which it should properly be, rather than child of him) is a reference to matthew 23: 15.
