This song is about the disconnect between Marlin and his father after his mother passed. I see a few likely errors in the lyrics above, E.g. "...gave our girl THE ride" subtle but big difference in meaning. Also "...but you've (his father) got burden in you" could be wrong but that is what I hear and resonates with me.
