There seems to be a lot of confusion about this song.
I'd like to clarify, once and for all, that this song is not about her boyfriend, Joe. It isn't a breakup song. It isn't about romance at all, or the album's love triangle, either. This song is about the situation with Scott Borchetta, and the loss of ownership of her music catalog. This and My Tears Ricochet are both about that. I will provide evidence of this:
Both songs share two very similar lyrics. In Hoax, she talks about standing on a cliffside, screaming, "give me a reason." In My Tears Ricochet, she talks about "screaming at the sky." The second set of lyrics are even more closely related. In Hoax, she says, "I am ash from your fire," and in My Tears Ricochet, she elaborates on this: "if I'm on fire, you'll be made of ashes, too."
These very obvious connections between the songs corroborate that they are indeed about the same subject, which is, specifically, Scott Borchetta's betrayal. The difference between the songs is that My Tears Ricochet is about TS being powerful in her pain and wanting Borchetta to recognize the magnitude of his actions, while Hoax is, on the other hand, an admittance of just how deeply his betrayal hurt her, and her surrendering to the situation (i.e "this has broken me down," "this has frozen my ground," "you knew you won, so what's the point in keeping score?"). One is about feeling powerful, the other about feeling powerless, but both songs reflects a stage of grief that she went through in processing the situation. And the songwriting is brilliant. Well done, Taylor. Well done.

I’m her person and I understand the songs completely because of it

Since 2017 been clued in fully more so and I just wasn’t receiving whichever grandiose gesture well from not coming out publicly and saying such. And now it’s not so much a need as it was back then though would be an encouragement to not allow whichever to silence us together and not just me about an us

The “faithless” part within my love for her (when others’ opinions get in her mind even her own self talk as if she’s not enough) is the hoax

Things like that and of course her description in transitioning to her admitting there’s a person worth fighting for..

And admitted whoever an ex. Yet people will continue to see all they would like

Until it comes from her mouth on who..
