I think that the meaning behind the song is that they don't think it was just their skill that got them where they are. Most rappers today talk about how they are the best, no-one can beat them, their skill got them everywhere. Fort Minor is talking about how they were persistent, and never gave up. This is basically a very good bit of advice too. You don't need skill to be successful, that's only 20% of the battle. 70% will come from your own perseverance, and you will always have more pain than pleasure, and you always require a little bit of luck. It's never fun, but you will get there if you try hard enough. It is just a great message, unlike these piece of s*t rappers that don't even write their own rhymes, and just talk about themselves, drugs, beating their girl, or shooting up a joint.
