It may be sentimental and trite, but as a child in the 1940’s it affected me so much I had a recurring dream, walking with someone, I didn’t know who, towards a beautiful sunset. Now in my eighties, I believe the “someone” was all those whom I have loved and who have loved me throughout my life. That is what the song means to me, though it is clearly, quite simply a love song to a life partner. The melody is pure lyricism, and the best recording by far is that iby Kenneth McKellar.
