He is looking back to a time in his life where he possibly was experiencing his first love. He is daydreaming about a specific time or times when they would take walks in "their" garden.. This specific vision focuses on a specific night when they were in the garden and he sees this telling time of holding her in his arms. All of his senses were heightened with the memories. He knows he is dreaming in vain of a love that could not work but in his heart it remains the same. It can't happen again but he can remember and it will be with him until he dies.
But what about the Stardust? I think that is similar to the Tinkerbell effect that where we see the magic of "Stardust" falling all around us.
