I think the song is about the loss of a great love. I can identify with the lyrics in that I screwed up many years ago and lost the beautiful love of my ex-wife. We separated in 1994 and divorced in 2001. During those years between the separation and divorce I hoped and prayed we could reconcile, but unfortunately for me it wasn't to be. For her I no longer exist. Even though 14 have passed I still love her so the lyrics in this song strike hard and true, especially where Justin sings "I love you still, I always will." However, the last verses of the song sounds (which I may be wrong) like this man is going to commit suicide when Justin sings "I turn and close the door, with one last good bye. I will return no more, I'll take my heart and let it fly." This I hope I am wrong about because I don't think Justin would promote or encourage suicide which is evident in "Billy" another selection on Justin ' s CD "The View From The Hill." Though I still love and miss my ex-wife immensely, suicide has never been option. I do wish I could have met someone else that could free my heart, but it never happened.
