Tthe song, I believe, is about Cindy’s breakup with Keith whom she subsequently married. However, back then Cindy regretted her decision and tried to get her boyfriend back who had moved on to someone new named Candy. I know because I am that Candy. Hope this dispels any other theories. Thank you.
