Although songs have different interpretation depending on the amount of thought put into it by each person, I think Justin's meanings are deeper than meets the eye, or ears in this case. The damsel in distress wants more than her life has to offer, so she wishes upon the stars for something better. Justin explains that with him her life won't be full of the hurt that she's been through. That she won't have to keep going through it all alone. That when it's all said and done she'll be the one that looks down at the people who are wishing upon her stars.
