I think the lyrics are trying to tell us that we are going through life without really accomplishing anything, we get medals and ribbons for achievements but they go to the ground in the end. Along with us. "we've sung of the end but who truly understands it?". This makes me think that there's an apocalyptic sense to the lyrics, and parts of it relate to the bible, so I think they are trying to say "open your eyes you blind fucks". I'd like to explain more of the meanings to the song but I'm not wasting time telling people who sleep through life what they don't wanna know.
