Just to go along with my last post I believe that he is also saying that he wanted to be with her so badly he didn't want to be without her, but now he has to give that up because she is not willing to do what it takes to be with him. He wishes that he could somehow make her hurt and feel it how he does but he cares for her and doesn't want to do that. The only way he can move on is to let the hope of ever being with her go. It was easier on her and her life to not open up and love and be with him so in that she sold him out to save herself.
