Meaning
This song pays tribute to the bravery, courage, optimism and perseverance of the firefighters who lost their lives trying to rescue people trapped in the World Trade Center towers after the terrorist attacks in New York City on September 11, 2001. The lyrics describe the experiences of these firefighters who entered the World Trade Center towers in attempts to save people, completely unaware that the sturctures were about to collapse. The persona of the lyrics is a person who was saved by the firefighters. They are describing the enormous gratitude that they feel, and the new approach to life that being a victim of the attacks has given them. The repetition of "Everything is gonna be alright" serves to reflect the words of the firefighters. The excerpts in brackets are New York City mayor, Michael Bloomberg's address on the first anniversary of 9/11 and Abraham Lincoln's famous Gettysburg Address which was repeated for 9/11 victims.
