I think the song is about letting go, losing some one hurts yes and your alowed to break, but what hurts the most isn't that they are gone but that they never got the chance to say and do what they really wanted to, never having the chance to say I love you or to have a future together hurts more then anything. I think the meaning to this song is that once children turn 18 that they are put out to the test, even if there not ready. Just because they are said to be adults in the eyes of the law does not mean they are mentally ready or emotionly.
