The guy desperately desires "sugar" in this song and it's obviously something she gives him. Maroon 5 has written this kind of songs before. (Like Misery) The man in these songs is deeply addicted to her and scared of losing her.
I think this is a love song but not 100% happy song.
He has something easily breakable in the heart (like other songs of Maroon 5) and "sugar" is the thing to keep it not broken.
And because Adam sings sexy, I felt "sugar" is something sexy.
But I think listeners can imagine what "sugar" is.
