Well, obviously this song is about war and dealing with the ptsd (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) afterward. It seems like this man is now empty after his experiences in the war, whether it be within his own mind or outside of it. "I tried so hard to obey the law and see the meaning of this all," would make the listener think that the man in the song is now a deserter, coming home before his time. "I fall asleep and dream a dream. I'm floating in a silent dream. No one places blame on me," sounds as though there is something that he did wrong. Possibly allowing his men to be killed? He is having a hard time with dealing with his experiences, as stated before, and he now feels as though he is hollow and all meaning has been taken from him in one way or another. A very good song.
